Report on Human Rights with a Roma Chapter
14 January 2009. - The European Parliament has adopted a report on the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union. In her amendments to the report, Lívia Járóka (EPP-ED) urged an action-oriented strategy for Roma, which will offer a roadmap with clear objectives for the Member States.

Sakharov Prize 2008 awarded to Hu Jia
The European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded this year to Chinese political activist Hu Jia, EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering announced in Strasbourg today. The prize ceremony took place in Strasbourg on 17 December.

Paris Equality Summit
The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union is holding a second summit on equality on 29 and 30 September 2008 in Paris.Lívia Járóka (EPP-ED) in her address, pointed out the prevalent segregation and constant discrimination faced by Roma children which negatively impacts their future ability to find gainful employment in later life.

The first European Roma Summit will take place tomorrow in Brussels, where he leaders of EU institutions, as well as international and Roma NGOs, will negotiate the specific content of the upcoming European Roma Strategy.

ERIO Seminar on Multiple Discrimination
The European Roma Information Office (ERIO) held a seminar on Multiple Discrimination on June 19th-20th in Brussels. This was the first time that a Roma organisation held a seminar focussed specifically on Multiple Discrimination.

Several programmes took place yesterday in Brussels on the occasion of the International Roma Day. Lívia Járóka MEP spoke of the changes in progress in the policies concerning the reception of the European Roma, and – as one of its primary conditions – the necessity of reinforcement in the civil sphere.
